The institution


The Gustavo de Maeztu Museum belongs to the Estella-Lizarra City Council. Since 1991, it has had an agreement with the Government of Navarra, which establishes the collaboration between both institutions for the creation of the museum. Under this agreement, the Government of Navarra provided the building, while the City Council of Estella provided the Gustavo de Maeztu collection, with the museum's management being entirely municipal.

The Museum has an Internal Regulation published in the Official Gazette of Navarra No. 84, on July 7, 1999. (See regulation).

Following the approval of Foral Law 10/2009, of July 2, on Museums and Permanent Collections of Navarra, the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum is recognized as one of the Museums of Navarra by the Second Additional Provision of the aforementioned Law.

On June 14, 2010, through the signing of an agreement between the Department of Culture and Tourism-Príncipe de Viana Institution and the Estella-Lizarra City Council, the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum was incorporated into the System of Museums and Permanent Museographic Collections of Navarra.

As part of the established collaboration, the Estella-Lizarra City Council and the Department of Culture and Tourism-Príncipe de Viana Institution sign an annual agreement to finance the operational costs of the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum. Through this agreement, the Museum received 25,000 euros in 2010 and 10,000 euros in 2011.


Get to know the institution


The Gustavo de Maeztu Museum is a municipal monographic museum. It opened its doors in June 1991. It is located in the Palace of the Kings of Navarra, property of the Government of Navarra. The entire collection is property of the Estella-Lizarra City Council, which manages the Museum. The Museum Regulations, published in the BON in 1998, have governed the internal functioning of the Museum since its publication.



Objectives and purposes


The Gustavo de Maeztu Museum aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Guarantee the protection and conservation, as well as promote the enrichment and improvement of the Heritage assets that make up the municipal collection of Estella-Lizarra.
  • Exhibit and guarantee public access to them and facilitate their study by researchers.
  • Promote knowledge and dissemination of the works that make up the museum's collection, promoting and carrying out the development of education programs and cultural dissemination activities.
  • Develop research programs and training of specialized personnel and establish collaborative relationships with other museums, universities or cultural institutions, organizing temporary exhibitions and developing joint actions to fulfill their purposes.
  • Provide advisory, study, information or opinion services of a scientific or technical nature that are required by the competent bodies of the Foral or Municipal Administration, or that arise from agreements or contracts granted to public or private entities, with natural persons. , under the conditions and with the requirements determined by regulation.
