Information and services
The Didactics Department of the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum develops educational and dissemination work on the artist and the artist's works, aimed at schoolchildren, associations, institutions, public and private organizations..., to all those people or groups that request it. .
In this sense, the Department manages specific projects developed for the students of educational centers in its surroundings, as well as other educational programs aimed at the rest of the social sectors, designing a pedagogical offer linked to the actions developed by the Museum. p>
It also designs guided tours for adults related to the taste or bias of the group, namely, with a gender perspective, related to the generation of '98, related to the historical moment... The objective is to spread knowledge about the Maeztu's work and the temporary collections to all types of audiences, adapting it to the needs of each visitor.
In addition to the offer linked to the Gustavo de Maeztu collection, various activities and artistic workshops are carried out throughout the year, both for children and adults, all of them carried out thanks to the sponsorship of Obra Social “la Caixa” and the supply of complete support material by the Sennelier company.
To carry out these initiatives, we have a teaching space with bibliographic resources and artistic materials that help encourage creation in an ideal space for knowledge and the meeting and exchange of ideas.

This program is aimed at teachers and students of Primary Education, for whom we have designed a guided tour of the Gustavo de Maeztu collection, tailored to the needs of this educational level.
The main objective is to provide students with the necessary strategies to read, interpret, and enjoy any visual, plastic, and artistic work, as well as to introduce them to the world of art and images both as producers and potential receivers. The goal is not for students to develop technical skills, but to enhance the basic processes of perceiving visual representations and expressing feelings, values, and ideas (the artwork as a living experience).
The activity consists of two sessions:
- Educational workshop at the school
- Visit to the Museum: Students will tour the main spaces of the museum with a guide. The visit is designed as a dynamic activity where, rather than simply acquiring information about the collection, students are encouraged to make interpretations based on what they directly see in the artworks. The objectives of the visit are:
- To make contact with the artwork in a space specifically designed for it, the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum.
- To understand the value of a museum in relation to the artwork.
- To promote dialogue among students between the selected works as a means for learning through art.
- To encourage students to reflect and stimulate their observations, rather than simply seek "correct answers."
- To provide tools for analysis and communication that will be useful for future visits to this and other art institutions.
- To study and analyze key elements of Gustavo de Maeztu's work.
Target Audience:
Teachers and students of Primary Education.
Number of participants:
A maximum of 15 students per group and educator. If the class exceeds this number, it will be split into two groups, both for the workshop and the museum visit. Each group must be accompanied by a teacher.

In this regard, through Gustavo de Maeztu's work, we can analyze languages, techniques, and expressive procedures that will be very useful when analyzing other artworks. For teachers who wish to introduce their students to the work of Gustavo de Maeztu, the art gallery organizes a series of individual sessions with each teacher to learn about the life and work of the Basque painter, and then be able to pass on that knowledge to their students, first with a session in the classroom and later with a visit to the museum's galleries.
Our Didactics department annually programs a series of temporary exhibitions that contribute to the research and analysis of various aspects of the artist Gustavo de Maeztu. In order to bring these museographic proposals closer and make Maeztu's collection visible to schoolchildren, the Educational Service invites interested teachers to take a guided tour of the different exhibitions.

Educational Activities
Our workshops
Coinciding with the holiday periods of the school calendar, the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum organizes a series of
With this free activity, the museum becomes not only a reference for artistic enjoyment and knowledge but also a place of creation for the little ones, bringing them closer to art through personal experimentation and the application of various techniques and methods, observation, artistic vocabulary, and imagination. It also aims to foster teamwork and values such as tolerance and empathy.
The Museum thus becomes a link between culture and society, a meeting place where children discover and experience art.
The workshops are sponsored by Obra Social La Caixa, and the company Sennelier provides all the materials.
This is a periodically developed activity aimed at individuals over 18 years old, with or without artistic training, who wish to deepen their knowledge, creation, and handling of painting techniques. To this end, attendees of the Experimental Workshops benefit from the support and experience of a professional painter who leads the activity.
With this initiative, the aim is for participants to approach the plastic artwork as creators rather than mere spectators, making it an experience of interaction and dialogue between different materials and mediums. The user thus becomes the artist themselves, discovering the inherent sensations of pictorial creation.
In short, it is about acquiring a direct and transversal experience that connects technical knowledge, understanding of the language of visual arts, and creativity.
The workshops are sponsored by Obra Social La Caixa, and the company Sennelier provides the materials. Those interested in participating in these free activities receive a certificate of attendance.
With the aim of bringing art and culture closer to all sectors of society, the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum organizes a series of weekend conferences aimed at individuals over 18 years old. These conferences are designed to explore different eras and artistic movements from historical, artistic, and literary contexts. For this reason, the sessions are divided into three pillars – History, Art History, and Literature – led by various specialists in these disciplines.
The Estella art gallery thus becomes an ideal space for the exchange of knowledge and ideas, as well as for creating a community interested in cultural heritage.
The programs of the Multidisciplinary Workshops are sponsored by Obra Social La Caixa. Those interested in participating in these free activities receive a certificate of attendance.
Since 2016, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum, the Library staff has been offering monthly workshops to all interested users. These workshops focus on exploring a specific era, movement, and artist through introductory bibliographic sessions. This initiative aims to make the extensive catalog of volumes housed in the Museum's Library accessible to all sectors of society, providing each visitor with personalized attention tailored to their interests and knowledge, guided by the Didactics staff.
Bibliographic consultations are available upon request from Tuesday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
In its effort to bring art closer to all social sectors, the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum organizes activities for seniors, considering this group a fundamental pillar for cultural memory and the preservation of our heritage.
In these workshops, participants will explore the galleries of the museum that house the legacy of the Alavese painter. These visits will be guided by a guest professional artist who will share their knowledge and experiences about Gustavo de Maeztu’s painting.
With this activity, the Estella art center aims to promote personal development, strengthen the mind, and foster social bonds. Ultimately, the goal is to combine the heritage value of the Museum and the city of Estella with the intangible cultural heritage of seniors' memories, enabling them to share their museum experience with those around them.
Accesible Museum
One of the main missions of the Museum is to contribute to fostering social cohesion through culture, thus combating exclusion, discrimination, and inequality among any group. To this end, guided tours and activities are organized, tailored to the characteristics and needs of each group. The goal is to transform the art gallery into an open space that helps to raise awareness and integrate these individuals into society, as well as to stimulate their abilities and achieve greater personal self-awareness.
- People with sensory functional diversity.
- People with psychological and intellectual functional diversity.
- People with physical and organic functional diversity.
- People at risk of social exclusion.
- Special Education and functional diversity school centers.
Additionally, to accommodate all groups according to their interests, the Museum designs tours focusing, for instance, on gender perspectives, the Generation of '98, the historical and cultural context anchoring the works of the Alavese painter, and more.
