The Gustavo de Maeztu Museum presents the work of the artist Iñaki Lazkoz in the exhibition « Suggestions» space

The Gustavo de Maeztu Museum has the “Suggestions” exhibition space at its entrance. An exhibition space that temporarily brings together the most striking events related to the world of art.

In this case, the space is hosting the work “441 Singel-Ámsterdam” by the artist Iñaki Lazkoz.

The “Suggestions” space is conceived as a window. The visitor enters the museum and approaches the work, at that moment, he/she can get to know the artistic world and the most recent creations of the artists exhibiting there.

The work “441 Singel-Amsterdam” is an oil on linen created by Iñaki in 2023 with dimensions of 130x130cm.

The artist is considered a slow producer, we can find few works of this size in his production, as his work focuses on the meticulousness of technique and detail. He paints mainly architectural themes taken to the smallest detail. This work sums up his artistic career very well, Lazkoz is pure art that leaves those who admire him speechless.

This painting belongs to the category “travel memories”. It is a group of buildings which, when he visited Amsterdam, he had the feeling that they were waiting for him, as if everything had been prepared for his arrival, as if the painting already existed before it was painted. He often has this feeling and calls it “The Iñaki Lazkoz Syndrome”. The artist comments that people around him also suffer from this syndrome, when they send him photos of moments that resemble his works.

Iñaki likes his works to lack people, although he admits that sometimes he likes to leave a window if there are people inside, as a reference to Eduard Hopper, whose work he admires, with the idea of what happens behind the windows.

In the painting, the white bay window on the corner stands out, which comes forward like the prow of a ship, and symbolically the “American tourist”, defined as such by the clothes he wears, on an intermediate plane between the buildings and the viewers in the painting. He represents a link between all the unknowns contained in the work and ourselves. Both the viewpoint and the accidental tourist-protagonist make the artist think of Hopper.

We can characterise Iñaki’s work as very personal, with a particular way of understanding painting.

The “Suggestions” space can be visited during Museum opening hours, from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and in the afternoons from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm; Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
