The Gustavo de Maeztu Museum is exhibiting works by Jesús Lasterra in the ‘Sugerencias’ space

The Gustavo de Maeztu Museum is presenting a new artistic initiative in its ‘Sugerencias’ exhibition space with a display of five works by the artist Jesús Lasterra. This temporary exhibition allows the public to explore the artist’s creative world through a representative selection of his work.
The ‘Sugerencias’ space, located at the museum’s main entrance, is conceived as a window onto contemporary creation and the most notable events on the art scene. This space has hosted works by various artists, fostering dialogue between the museum’s artistic heritage and current artistic expressions.

The five selected works by Jesús Lasterra reflect his unique artistic sensibility and offer visitors an opportunity to discover the key elements of his visual language. The exhibition brings together works that invite contemplation and reflection, highlighting the artist’s career and creative personality.
His works reveal a personal perspective on landscape, memory and the sensations that emerge from everyday experience, transformed through his own visual language. Observation and intuition coexist in his works, allowing us to gain an insight into the sensibility of an artist who knew how to capture the essence of the landscape and the cultural identity of Navarre, giving rise to images of great expressive power that invite the viewer to pause and discover new interpretations with each viewing.
Jesús Lasterra (1914–1990) developed an artistic career equally marked by an interest in landscape and a particular sensitivity towards the depiction of the natural environment. Regarded as one of the leading figures in Navarrese painting of the second half of the 20th century, Lasterra produced a body of work characterised by compositional strength, a mastery of colour and a deeply personal vision of nature. His landscapes, executed with great chromatic sensitivity, offer an emotional interpretation of the region and constitute a unique contribution to contemporary Navarrese art.

Trained in Navarre and Madrid, the artist began his career under the tutelage of the masters Javier Ciga Echandi and Gerardo Sacristán, whilst also studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Pamplona. In 1953, he moved to Madrid to continue his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he was influenced by distinguished teachers and consolidated his artistic vocation.
His work, initially rooted in the Navarran tradition of landscape painting, evolved over the course of a career marked by numerous exhibitions and accolades. Among his most significant awards are the First Prize for Engraving from the Directorate-General for Fine Arts (1961), the Second National Prize for Engraving, and the First Prize for Engraving at the ‘Pintores de África’ exhibition (1962).
Having settled permanently in Pamplona in 1970, he pursued an intense programme of artistic and exhibition activity, culminating in major shows such as the retrospective held at the Ciudadela in Pamplona in 1981. From 1983 onwards, he combined his creative work with teaching on continuing education courses for adults.
Alongside his work as a painter, Lasterra was also one of the most important Spanish printmakers of his generation, recognised with the National Printmaking Prize. His mastery of etching and other printmaking techniques enriched his artistic language and resulted in a body of work of great technical and expressive quality.

The exhibition can be visited free of charge during the museum’s usual opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm and from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm; Sundays and public holidays, from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. Free admission.
